Background

In December 2001, the Association for a More Just Society (AJS)'s Honduran partner organization, ASJ, launched a virtual magazine named Revistazo, a play on words meaning both "another look" and a "big magazine." Revistazo is dedicated to carrying out in-depth investigative journalism on cases and issues that are commonly censured in the traditional media. Revistazo serves as a source of information cited by the traditional mass media and as an alternative for the public, tired of the media controlled by groups of power. Through our publications we are working to motivate fair legal action and structural changes, and we have found Revistazo to be an indispensable tool in our work for justice in Honduras.

The first three editions of Revistazo were dedicated to election of the newest Supreme Court in Honduras, who will be in office for the next 7 years. Revistazo's impact was more than we expected. From December through February we received more than 5000 hits on the website. Newspapers referenced the site on various occasions. After the elections took place, the new President of the Supreme Court met with our staff and congratulated us on its content and quality. The Nominating Committee said that they consulted our site when making decisions.

The fourth edition was dedicated to the election of the new Human Rights Commissioner. In this case, Revistazo was virtually the first to touch on the theme, and its publication caused quite a stir. In three days we received more than 1000 hits. A local paper ran almost a full-page article based entirely on our content. Radio commentators mentioned the page when discussing the topic.

In the end, after three days of intense debate and negotiation, the National Congress elected Ramon Custodio, a man well known for his integrity and his commitment to human rights. He clandestinely founded one of the first Human Rights organizations in Honduras during the 1980's.

Revistazo has continued to grow and evolve. The site is now updated with new articles every day, and Revistazo is becoming a well-known name among Honduran journalists and politicians.

English versions of several past Revistazo editions are available at www.revistazo.com/english.
